Venue
The FNB building, located on the Wits West campus in Braamfontein, was refurbished in 2010 to the value of R70-million. It now boasts several large, two large teaching auditoriums (450 and 350 seats) and a further three teaching venues with approximately 200 seats each for use by undergraduate accountancy, science and engineering students. The upgraded facility provides state-of-the-art electronic access and audio-visual teaching facilities as well as new and refurbished seminar rooms, tutorial rooms and offices. A ground floor student centre provides an informal working area with wifi connectivity. The building also features a valuable art collection curated by Natalie Knight. The building boasts a new roof, lighting, air conditioning system and external weatherproofing. Attention has been paid to energy efficiency, and grey water harvested from the new auditorium roof, is used to flush toilets. Built in 1936 for the Empire Exhibition, the building provided exhibition space for the government of South Africa for many years. Since the 1980s, when the Milner Park Site (old Rand Showgrounds) was taken over by the University, the building has undergone several renovations. The FNB building currently accommodates the Wits School of Accountancy and the major upgrade was undertaken to accommodate the growth in student numbers at Wits in the last decade.
