Welcome to the 15th SACI Inorganic Conference, the conference within a conferenceOn behalf of the organizing Committee I would like to invite you to join us at the 15th Inorganic Chemistry Conference (INORG2011) in Johannesburg in January 2011.The Inorganic Chemistry meetings started off as a local meeting, organized by the CSIR and WITS near Rustenburg in 1981, but soon grew into a national biennial conference. At the third meeting in Rustenburg in 1985, which hosted an invited international speaker, it was decided to rotate the venue and organizers for forthcoming events. Since then, the conference has grown both in the number of participants and stature, with many new initiatives introduced. At the previous meeting in Bloemfontein INORG2009, considerable support from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Dalton Division was received for the event. INORG2011 will be another unique conference, as it features for the first time, a We are compiling an exciting program and urge you to come and enjoy and contribute to the YEAR OF CHEMISTRY! Prof. Dwight Sweigart from Brown University, Providence, RI, USA has regretfully withdrawn from participating in INORG2011 due to health reasons. At this point in time it is impossible for him to attend the SACI Convention 2011. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. Prof. Rudi van Eldik from the University of Erlangen,Germany, will now be the Plenary Speaker for the Inorganic Chemistry section at INORG2011.
Rudi van Eldik was born in 1945 in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and grew up in Johannesburg (SA). He received his chemistry education and DSc degree at the former Potchefstroom University (SA), followed by post-doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA) and the University of Frankfurt (Germany). He was appointed as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Private University of Witten/Herdecke in 1987. In 1994 he accepted his present position as Professor of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. His research interests cover the elucidation of inorganic and bioinorganic reaction mechanisms, with special emphasis on the application of high pressure thermodynamic and kinetic techniques. In recent years his research team has also focused on the application of low-temperature rapid-scan techniques to identify and study reactive intermediates in catalytic cycles. He is editor of the series Advances in Inorganic Chemistry, Co-editor of the Journal of Coordination Chemistry and editor of 12 monographs. He serves on the Editorial Board of several chemistry journals. Rudi is also the author of almost 800 research papers and review articles in international journals. In 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (‘Bundesverdienstkreuz’) by the Federal President of Germany, and the Inorganic Mechanisms Award by the Royal Society of Chemistry (London).
